What pets can teach us about marriage

photo from flickr and alexey05Our Daisy dog will eat my NEW Maui Jim sunglasses (Sunglass Hut replaced them for free!!) and five-minutes later you will hear me cooing about how sweet she is and giving her big belly scratches! Then my husband will do something wrong and forgiveness doesn't come so easy. He can be in the dog house for a long time. Why can't the unconditional love we give our pets be the same with our spouses?

Dr. Phillips provides useful take-aways in the latest NY Times article, What pets can teach us about marriage. "When our pets make mistakes, we don’t take it personally and are quick to forgive. We give them the benefit of the doubt. Yet when our spouse does something wrong, we often react with anger and blame."

This article highlighted a lot of truths for me so thought I would share. My other take-away is to work on giving my husband the same enthusiastic greeting that Daisy often gets :)

Found your blog over at TheDailyReviewer.com and saw this post listed under it. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs and I can relate to exactly what you're saying. We often hold grudges against each other for a couple of days while if one of our pups did something wrong they're still up on the bed snuggling with us every night.

Great insight.

Thanks Linda for your comment! I think pet owners instantly see the difference in how we treat our pets vs our partners. Now I need to read this post daily :)

Very insightful. Thanks for sharing this, Misty. I do feel guilty sometimes thinking about how I get really mad at the husband because he's putting things on top of the counter sometimes but never at the dog who always nibbles on my furniture.
