5-minutes with Lu Ann Cahn about her one year of firsts

Lu Ann Cahn shares her journey of trying something new every day for one year on her blog, One Year of Firsts. I love these photos of Lu Ann finishing a 10k mud run for the MS Society!

Lu Ann, you are one gutsy gal to try something new every day for a year! Right now you're on Day 215 of firsts and your experiences have varied from plain ole' crazy, gross, fun and moving like eating a scorpion, spending 3-hours in a wheelchair, letterboxing in the woods, going 135 mph in a race car and peddling a bicycle cab.

What inspired you to go big and commit to One Year of Firsts?

Well, first, I was just stuck. I've been a tv reporter for 30 years and I wasn't reacting well to changes and new technology. My daughter encouraged me to get out of my rut and use some creative energy to start a blog. It worked. It's completely rocked my world. By changing what I was doing, learning social networks and saying yes to new experiences, new opportunities and challenges have been coming my way. It's all fun again.

With 215 days of firsts under your belt, which firsts have inspired and scared you the most?

It just depends on when you ask what's inspired me and scared me the most. This week I spent three hours in a wheelchair and that really shook me to the core. My whole view of the world looked different from that chair. People honked at me to get out of the way when I tried to cross the street. I loved going on the 10k mud run for the MS Society. I was terrified going over some of the high obstacles.

What has surprised you most about this journey and what have you learned about yourself?

I'm surprised to find out I might like golf (which I've always assumed was a big waste of time), that I really love physical challenges and getting my hands dirty. I found out from the very first day of this journey with the Polar Bear Plunge, that if I'm a little excited and nervous about something I'm about to try, it usually means I'm on the right path. I say yes to things I know I would have said no to before, (mucking a stall, trying a cartwheel, eating a scorpion, going to the opera. I didn't like the opera, but now I know). Every first just makes life fresh again and reminds me we all should be constantly learning and evolving. You don't have to do a first every day, but everyone should purposely get out of your daily box and shake it up. It's living life to the fullest and sometimes I think we all forget how to do that.
