Treat yourself to this book! Please! Actually, I'm stealing these words from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love and now Committed. This is what she she says about The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and it's absolutely true. This is the first book I've read in a dog's age and I did not want it to end.
My sister-in-law let me borrow this book (a lady waiting in line at Costco turned her on to it) when we were chatting about how hard it is to find time to read. I told her I needed something short (besides my magazines). Since Guernsey is composed entirely of letters, she thought it would be a good one. The story reveals the truths behind the German occupation of Guernsey Island, a tiny island off the coast of England, during World War II. It also shows us how true love triumphs over seductive romance if we follow our hearts. The devastating and surprising accounts of what happened during the German occupation are told by the members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a collectic group of characters who met weekly to take refuge from the Nazis, who lived to share their stories through letters to Juliet, a British writer.
It will leave you wanting to abandon everything to go frolic on Guernsey Island to walk the cliffs, smell the ocean air and become a member of the Potato Peel Society!
I should add that I dropped everything that I should have been doing and finished this book in less than a week. If you saw my light on late at night it was me being transported to Guernsey!
