5 happy foods for fall

Even the best of us need a pick-me-up from time to time. In addition to getting some fresh air, exercise, a get together with friends or family - here are five mood-boosting foods to help lift your spirits. They are rich with nutrients like Foliate, Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12 and Omega-3 fats that research has shown to help depression. As for digging into a pint of ice cream, I looked all over the web for research that supports ice cream as a mood-booster but found nothing! I tried!

5 happy foods for fall....

Winter squash is high in foliate and omega-3. Get inspired with these winter squash recipes at Smitten Kitchen.

Your best source for Vitamin D is getting sunshine and making sure foods like Cow's Milk, Shrimp, Cod, Sardines and Salmon are a part of your diet. If you don't drink milk like moi than yogurts are the next best thing and a yummy source for Vitamin B-12. Look here for yogurts with Vitamin D - not all of them do. BTW, Stonyfield Yogurt is on the list and one of my favorite yogurts. It's organic, no artificial ingredients or sweeteners. Only the good stuff :)

Spinach has mega foliate and every other vitamin you need! Check out this yummy recipe for Pear, Avocado Spinach salad at Fresh 365.

Walnuts are awesome for Omega-3 Fatty Acids and an easy snack. While walnuts are harvested in December, they are available year round. This squirrel has some serious talent. Love it!

Oranges are a must-eat for Foliate and other essential nutrients like Vitamin C and Fiber.

For more information about seasonal foods, I found this easy map highlighting the fresh produce that is grown and sold locally near you.
