National Day of Service: Inspiring ideas for helping out

Hello Inspiring Ladies (and men!)!! Ready to help change the world?! Check out the Renew America Together website Obama and his team created to inspire Americans to volunteer in their communities. I love the idea of our government harnessing the power of the Internet to reignite Americans to make a difference! What is the National Day of Service?

This national day of service will fall on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 19, 2009 and, unlike past calls to service, President-elect Obama is calling on all Americans to do more than just offer a single day of service to their cities, towns and neighborhoods. He is asking all of us to make an ongoing commitment to our communities. Never has it been more important to come together in shared purpose to tackle the common challenges we face.

To get inspired - here is a message from Michelle Obama and a few ideas to consider!

Here's inspiring ideas from Seth Godin's Blog for National Service Day. Thank you Lorrie with Web Marketing Therapy for sharing! :)

  1. Read a copy of the Lorax to a child that's never heard it.
  2. Teach someone how to sell their services on Craigslist, or how to use the web to find a job.
  3. Go through your house and find beloved books that you're glad you read... and give them to the library.
  4. Create and promote an online petition for a cause you care about.
  5. Host a house concert for an artist you love.
  6. Start a Facebook group for like-minded people who support the same non-profit you do. Commit to spending time to promote it, organize the people there and actually create outcomes of value.

Personally, my daughter and I checked out a book from her library about Martin Luther King, Jr and read it together. I have joined the Facebook cause and plan on inviting all my friends! On Monday we will volunteer California-style by joining Jamie, with Moms In Motion, and her girls for a beach cleanup!

I would love to hear your plans for Monday, National Service Day!

Thanks for posting about this - I did too on my own blog.

I'm very excited to take my daughter Josephine, who's 6, on her first volunteer excursion to help with our local Meals on Wheels. I can't wait!
